What is Christian Education?
Augustine School believes the chief tenets of a Christian education can be generally summarized with the following principles:
1. The glory of God
In accord with Scripture, we affirm that education should have the glory of God as its highest goal (1 Cor. 10:31).
2. The responsibility of parents:
We affirm that the education of children has been entrusted to parents, and that we simply serve as a ministry to parents in the parental task of educating children (Deut. 6:4ff.; Eph. 6:4).
3. The theological nature of all education
We believe that theology is indeed the “queen of the sciences,” and that all education is ultimately theological, in that all knowledge finds its origin and culmination in the reality of the Triune God.
4. The Lordship of Christ
We affirm the universal lordship of Christ, and that Christ is the Lord of the educational task, and that all things cohere in Christ (Col. 1:17).
5. The centrality of the Gospel
It is the Gospel that rescues and transforms us, and that includes the rescue and transformation of our minds (Col. 1:21-22; Rom. 12:1-2).
6. God as the author of all truth
As the Lord of all, God is the author of all truth, and truth always has its ultimate source in the Triune God of Scripture.
7. The coherence and beauty of all truth
Truth, having its origin in God, is coherent and beautiful, and a Christian education should thus help capture the imagination of students for that which is coherent and beautiful.
8. The goal of education
The goal of education should be that students know and love God, the author and goal of all knowledge, and that our students become wise, virtuous and Christian persons, who subject all knowledge to the universal lordship of Christ.
9. Education and action
We affirm that a Christian education should form students who are not only knowledgeable, but who act upon, and live in accord with such knowledge.
